Isotopes avoid sweep to 'Winders

Albuquerque right-hander Mike Nannini allowed just two hits in seven scoreles innings Thursday afternoon as the Isotopes blanked Tucson 5-0 to salvage one game in the four-game series.

The Sidewinders were limited to just three hits and failed to get a runner to third base after scoring 34 runs on 47 hits in the previous three games of the series. Tucson also finished the road trip with a 4-4 record. If Sacramento wins Thursday night against Memphis, the River Cats would regain first place in the PCL South Division.

The Isotopes scored three of their five runs on wild pitches, twice with runners scoring from second base on the wild tosses.

The Isotopes brokeup a scoreless game with a two-run fourth inning off Tucson starter Jon Cannon. Chris Ashby started the scoring with a solo home run, his first of the year. With two outs in the inning, the pitcher Nannini struck out but reached first base on a wild pitch. When catcher Craig Ansman threw to first base, Drew Niles rounded third and scored the second run when no one was covering home plate.

Albuquerque scored its second run of the game on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 3-0. The Isotopes pushed the lead to 4-0 in the sixth when Wilson Valdez bunted for a hit and scored on a double by Derek Wathan. The sixth inning ended when Joe Dillon lofted a long fly ball to left. Tim Olson never saw the baseball but Julio Ramirez raced over from center field, jumped over the fence in left and made the catch robbing Dillon of a home run. Ramirez threw to Andy Green who tossed to Steve Neal for the inning ending double play retiring Brian Banks.

Cannon suffered the loss for Tucson, allowing six hits and three runs in five innings of work.

Tucson's record fell to 27-20. The Sidewinders return home to host Portland Friday night in a 6:30 p.m. game. Jim Parque (1-1 5.65)will start for the Sidewinders against the Beavers Joey Hamilton (0-2 5.24). The game will air live on Cool 1450 AM.
