Charlottetown Islanders News Release

On Saturday, General Manager Jim Hulton announced the official signing of highly regarded prospect Matthew Butler.

"We are extremely excited to be adding Matthew to our young core of talent," commented Hulton. "At the time when we drafted Matthew, we knew he was committed to Shattuck St. Mary's for the 2022-23 season. We swung for the fences and are thrilled that he is deciding to report to the Island."

Butler, from St. John's, Newfoundland, stands at 5'6 ‚¬Â³ and 143 lbs He was selected in the 5th round (81st overall) in the 2022 QMJHL Draft. Last season with Shattuck St Mary's U16 he recorded 16 goals and 47 assists in 57 games.

"I'm super excited to sign with the Islanders and pumped to get going with the team and get to work at Training Camp," commented Butler. "Fans can expect to see a playmaking forward that will move the puck and try to create scoring chances every time I'm on the ice. I like to base my game on a player like Clayton Keller. As a smaller player, he has the skill and uses it to his advantage every time he's on the ice and is effective."

"This was a top priority for our team as we strive to improve in all areas," said Jim Hulton. "Matt is a dynamic offensive player with excellent vision & creativity. The signing was the result of a year-long process between our team and the Butler family. Our Head Scout Trevor Birt deserves all of the credit for this signing as he took charge of the process from beginning to end. We are pleased to welcome Matt and his family to our organization."

Butler will report to the Islanders 2023/24 Training Camp beginning in August.

Season Tickets for the 2023/24 season are now on sale in person at the Islanders Team Shop, online, or by phone at 902-892-7351.
