Isles Kick It off in Quebec on a High Note against Voltigeurs
November 4, 2021 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release
The Charlottetown Islanders made their first appearance in a Quebec rink this evening for the first time since February 16th, 2020 when the Isles organization played in Shawinigan. Now, the 2021-22 Islanders embark on their first Quebec road trip of the year kicking things off with tonight's action against the Drummondville Voltigeurs. The Islanders, being led offensively by former Voltigeurs captain himself Xavier Simoneau, were eager to pick their winning ways back up after an overtime loss to Moncton last time out. Drummondville gave a very warm welcome back to Simoneau including a nice ceremony, however, the Isles assistant captain and points leader was looking to spoil the night for Voltigeurs fans'.
The first period was fairly tame until the last three minutes when a long reviewed Drew Elliott goal was ruled to be good. Elliott pounded away at a puck loose in front of the net to put it past Francesco Lappena for his third tally of the season. Sam Oliver recorded the lone assist on the goal that put the Isles up 1-0. Just 18 seconds later is when Jakub Brabenec was able to find a bouncing puck near the net and launch it past Lappena to also record his third goal of the year. Keiran Gallant and Noah Laaouan were the helpers on this one.
Through the opening 20 minutes of play, the Isles led in shots 12-9.
At 7:38 into the second frame is when an absolute cannon was released at the Centre Marcel Dionne. Oscar Plandowski put everything he had on the puck when he stepped into it and released a clapper on Lappena that went top shelf and boosted the Islanders lead up to 3-0. Assisting on the goal were Xavier Simoneau and Patrick LeBlanc. The assist marked Simoneau's first tally as a player of the opposition at the Centre Marcel Dionne. Oliver Satny was also playing well as he remained perfect going into the final frame.
Shots on goal through 40 minutes remained to be in the Isles favor, this time at 24-15.
It didn't take long at all for the Islanders to hit the ice and find the back of the net in the final frame. It was just under two minutes in when Patrick Guay was able to keep his magic alive. Guay was able to get a quick one-off and beat Voltigeurs netminder Francesco Lappena, the goal being his eleventh of the year. Assisting on the Guay tally were Keiran Gallant and Jakub Brabenec. Unfortunately, for Oliver Satny, Charles-Antoine Dumont was able to sneak one past Satny for his third of the year and thus breaking up the Satny shutout. On the upside though for the Isles, this stood to be Drummondville's only marker of the game.
Jakub Brabenec's third of the season stood as the game-winner in this one. Oliver Satny stood tall making 28 saves on 29 shots for the win. Shots capped off in the Isles favor 34-29.
Three Stars of the Game:
Xavier Simoneau(CHA)- Assist in his return to Drummondville
Jakub Brabenec(CHA)- Game-winning goal and an assist
Charles-Antoine Dumont(DRU)- Goal
The win now boosts Charlottetown up to a 9-4-1-0 record as they continue on the road making their way to Sherbrooke to take on the PhÅ"nix at the Palais des Sports Leopold-Drolet. Puck drop is set for 7 pm EDT Friday night.
