Islanders Get Blown out in Second Leg of Quebec Road Trip

Charlottetown Islanders News Release

A Friday night trip to Baie-Comeau was far from fruitful for the Charlottetown Islanders. A crazy second period, including five goals in a ten-minute span, would be the undoing for the Islanders, losing by a score of 8-3 to the high-powered Drakkar.

The Islanders actually started the first period with a lot more zip than they had the past few games, taking it to the Drakkar early. Keith Getson opened the scoring less than two minutes in to the game, receiving the feed from Kevin Gursoy in the slot and burying it blocker side past Justin Blanchette for his second goal on the season.

Yaroslav Alexeyev would even the game up midway through the first. As his penalty ended, Alexeyev found a puck in the neutral zone and streaked in on Isles netminder Matthew Welsh, beating him cleanly for his seventh goal of the season.

As the second period opened up, the tides quickly shifted in favour of Baie-Comeau. Alexeyev would get his second of the game early in the period off of a tipped shot that Welsh couldn't see.

Following the Alexeyev goal, Baie-Comeau would begin to pour it on. Gabriel Fortier would notch his fourth of the year on a partial breakaway, sliding the puck underneath a sprawling Welsh to extend the lead.

Alexeyev would complete the hat trick five minutes later, getting the puck down low and snapping it past Welsh. For Alexeyev, that would be his league-leading ninth goal. That goal would chase Welsh from the net and bring in Dakota Lund-Cornish.

The new goalie wouldn't stop the scoring, however. Nathan Legare would regain his QMJHL scoring lead from Alexeyev with his seventh goal of the season during a 4-on-4 situation.

Drakkar rookie Logan Camp would get in on the action as well, snapping a one-time in the slot past Dakota Lund-Cornish. That would be the first QMJHL of the Bedford, Nova Scotia native's career.

The Islanders would begin to fight back late in the period. On a four minute 4-on-3 powerplay, Pierre-Olivier Joseph would notch his first of the season off a pass from Derek Gentile. Nikita Alexandrov would pull the score a little closer just minutes later, bringing it to 6-3 after 40 minutes.

Unfortunately for the Islanders that's as close as they would get. Defenseman Christopher Merisier-Ortiz would extend the lead to 7-3 off a slapshot from the point on the powerplay early in the third. Five minutes later, Calgary Flames prospect D'Artagnan Joly would get in on the scoring action, tapping in a backdoor pass to make it 8-3 for Baie-Comeau.

The Islanders will look to salvage the remainder of this road trip tomorrow afternoon in Chicoutimi, as they have a matinee matchup with the Sagueneens. George Matthews and Darcy Cudmore will have the call at 5pm Atlantic on Ocean 100!
