Islanders Extends Head Coach Cal Lee's Contract for 2004 Season

November 3, 2003 - arenafootball2 (af2) - Hawaiian Islanders News Release

HONOLULU – The Hawaiian Islanders announced today they have extended the contract of Head Coach Cal Lee for the 2004 season. Last season, Lee guided the Hawaiian Islanders to the league’s second highest turnaround season from 5-11 in 2002 to 11-7 finish and the af2 Western Division Championship losing to eventual champion Tulsa in the second round of the playoffs.

“It feels really good to be back for a second season,” said Lee. “What makes it special is that we’ve turned the corner and now we are going to continue to make big strides.

Lee indicated that he would retain his staff of assistant coaches. Last season’s coaches were, Doug Semones (defensive coordinator), Vince Passas (offensive coordinator), Darren Hernandez (defensive line/linebackers) and Frank Pahia (offensive line/fullbacks). The volunteer assistants were, John Naipo and Howard Peralta.

“My staff of assistant coaches are the people who made this turnaround possible,” Lee said. Without them, I’m just an ordinary coach.

“When we originally signed Cal Lee a year ago, we knew it would be the turning point of this franchise,” said Executive Director/General Manager Chris Dey. “It’s great to have him back in 2004 and we want our fans and supporters to know that we’ve committed ourselves to an even higher standard of excellence both on and off the field.

In addition to the Islanders accomplishments on the field, the front office staff earned the af2’s top award for Best Marketing Plan and Execution in 2003. The Islanders’ “You’re IN the Game Experience” included marketing and promotion of their new logo as well as their unique experience of providing fans with a behind the scenes look at the preparations for a professional football game.

Lee is also the defensive assistant coach for the University of Hawaii football team, which is currently 6-3 on the season.
