Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Aberdeen, MD- Ryan Adams went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and the IronBirds overcame an Epi DeLeon grand slam to defeat the Renegades 6-5 in the series finale at Ripken Stadium Thursday.

Adams's double in the fourth tied the game at 5-5. Jordan Wolf followed with a RBI groundout to score Adams and give Aberdeen the 6-5 lead. The IronBirds bullpen held the Renegades scoreless the rest of the way to preserve the victory and the series win.

The Renegades took the lead on DeLeon's grand slam in the first inning. DeLeon hit a 3-2 pitch from IronBirds starter Chris Salberg over the 404 sign in left centerfield for his first home run of the season.

DeLeon's grand slam was the first at Ripken Stadium since last August 23 when Aberdeen's Danny Figueroa hit the first grand slam in IronBirds history. The inning began when Emeel Salem and Shawn O'Malley hit consecutive singles. Stephen Vogt walked two batters later to load the bases for DeLeon, who began the season 0-for-8 before the grand slam.

Aberdeen answered with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Joe Mahoney ripped a two-run double to the right centerfield wall to drive in Matt Angle and Anthony Martinez. Mahoney later scored on an errant pickoff throw by Hudson Valley starter Diego Echeverria.

Echeverria (0-1), a knuckleballer, took the loss in his first professional start after giving up six runs on four hits in five innings.

IronBirds reliever Julio Soriano earned the win with 4 1/3 strong innings. Soriano (1-0) gave up a run on two hits with six strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings for the win.

Hudson Valley's Michael McCormick hit a solo home run just inside the left field foul pole to give the Renegades a 5-3 lead in the third inning.

The Renegades threatened in the sixth but Aberdeen reliever Kyle Touchatt, making his professional debut, held the Renegades scoreless. Henry Wrigley walked and Kevin Colon singled to put two one with no outs. A James Mayer sac bunt moved both runners into scoring position with one out. Touchatt then got Salem to ground out to first and froze O'Malley with a called third strike to end the inning.

Brent Allar worked a scoreless ninth for his first save.

Game Notes- Salberg lasted just 2/3 of an inning in his professional debut. He was a draft-and-follow player and signed this spring after being selected in the 22nd round of the 2006 draft...Salem had two steals...The IronBirds begin a two city, six game road trip on Thursday with the first of three at Staten Island.
