Published on June 25, 2009 under New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Right-hander Patrick Kantakevich will make his debut in Aberdeen this evening. The right-hander started two games with no-decisions with a 6.43 ERA with Low-A Delmarva. Kantakevich went 3-0 with a 1.29 ERA in 14 games with Rookie-level Bluefield in 2008.
ROSA DELIVERS AGAIN:
Garabez Rosa produced his second game-winning hit in three days after a single to left field in the 10th inning. Rosa went 4-for-8 in the Staten Island series (6/22-6/24), scoring a home run, a double and four RBI. The 19-year old is tied for the league high in RBI with 6. Rosa also increased his hit streak to four games.
SERIES-LY GOOD
Wednesday evening's 4-3 win was the first extra-inning victory over an opponent since Sept. 5, 2008 when the âBirds defeated Brooklyn 5-4 in 11 innings. The win allowed Aberdeen to capture their first series win against Staten Island since June 23-25, 2008.
SCORELESS STREAK SNAPPED
The IronBirds came into last night's contest with a 17 inning scoreless streak intact. The streak would last a season-high 18 innings before the Yankees shot in front of the âBirds 1-0 in the top of the second.
ANEMIC OFFENSE
The IronBirds have mustered just three runs over the past two contests. Despite Monday night's victory over the Yankees, Aberdeen managed just three hits. Last night's loss featured only four base hits (three singles, one double).
IT'S ALL DIVISIONAL
Aberdeen opens the season with 12 consecutive games against McNamara Division foes. Last season, the IronBirds held a 12-21 record against teams in the McNamara Division. A three game road trip in Hudson Valley (June 19-21) will be followed by a six-game homestand with Staten Island (June 22-24) and Brooklyn (June 25-27). The IronBirds then travel to Staten Island (June 28-30) for a three-game series before hosting their first non-divisional opponent Oneonta on July 1-3.
