Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, NY â A night after the Auburn Doubledays clinched the Pinckney Division championship, the party came to a screeching halt. The Aberdeen Ironbirds ripped out 15 hits and capitalized on four Doubledays errors to defeat Auburn 9-2 at Falcon Park. The loss is Auburn's worst home loss of the season but is only their 13th defeat in 58 contests.
A five-run Aberdeen second inning proved to be the knockout blow including a towering three-run homerun for Ironbirds second basemen Eric Grimm. Grimm torched Doubledays pitching going 3-for-5 with three RBI. âBirds first basemen Luis Jiminez contributed a four hit night with three RBI. It was a Grimm night for Auburn starter Danny Core (6-1) who lasted only 1 1/3 innings giving up five runs (only two earned) on six hits. The Doubledays would find no relief in the bullpen either as relievers gave up four runs on nine hits. Auburn pitching combined to allow a total of eight walks.
Ironbirds starter Christopher Ray (1-0) earned his first professional victory pitching five innings allowing one run on two hits with seven strikeouts. Ray maintained a no-hitter through four innings before giving up two hits in the Auburn fifth. Aberdeen's Tony Neal spelled relief pitching the final four innings allowing just one run on two hits with eight strikeouts. Neal and Ray combined for 15 strikeouts on the night, a Doubledays season-high. AJ Porfirio and Jarad Mangioni both had one RBI in the losing effort.
The Doubledays and Ironbirds conclude the three-game series Sunday night at Falcon Park for the "Second Annual Mullet Festival/NUCOR Community Night" at 6:05 PM. For ticket information contact the Falcon Park box office at (315) 255-2489.
