Iowa Stars Hire Jason Shaver as Team Broadcaster

DES MOINES, Iowa. - Iowa Stars President John Pettit announced that Jason Shaver has been hired as the Director of Broadcasting and Corporate Sales. Shaver will handle the play-by-play for all Stars broadcasts in addition to sell corporate sponsorships.

"We are thrilled to have Jason join our staff," said Pettit. "Building a fan base and community support from the ground level is something that Jason has been a part of in Texas. His desire and determination to take his career to the next level were assets that separated him from literally over 100 other candidates."

Shaver, 32, spent the past two seasons as the Vice President of Communications for the Texas Wildcatters of the ECHL. The 1995 graduate of Augsburg College (Minneapolis), grew up in the Twin Cities and started working in hockey as a member of the Minnesota North Stars game night staff. During the 1994-95 hockey season Shaver was a broadcast assistant for the Minnesota Moose of the now defunct IHL. His first full-time job was with the Waterloo Black Hawks (USHL) as the Director of Communications. Additionally, in the summer, Shaver was the radio voice of the Waterloo Bucks (Northwoods Baseball League). He was selected as the TV broadcaster for the 1995 USHL All-Star Game and was hired to handle the TV play-by-play for the 1996 Junior A National Championship Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa.

Shaver is a third generation hockey broadcaster, Jason's grandfather, Al Shaver, spent 26 seasons as the radio announcer for the Minnesota North Stars (NHL). He retired when the team relocated to Dallas. In 1993 Al Shaver was inducted into the National Hockey League Hall of Fame in Toronto, Canada. Wally Shaver, Jason's father is currently the broadcaster for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers hockey team.

About the Iowa Stars and the Affiliation with Dallas The Iowa Stars will begin a five-year affiliation agreement with the National Hockey League's Dallas Stars this fall as Iowa plays their inaugural season in the AHL. Per the affiliation agreement, the Dallas Stars will provide up to 22 players to the Iowa Stars. In addition, Dallas is also responsible for all hockey operation decisions as well as the hiring of the hockey operations staff.

The Iowa Stars will join 26 other clubs in the AHL, which serves as the top development league for all 30 National Hockey League teams. Entering its 70th season of operation this fall, over 80 percent of all players to compete in the NHL in 2003-04 were AHL graduates, and more than 400 players took the ice in both leagues.

The New Wells Fargo Arena

The Iowa Stars will begin play in the AHL in October 2005 in Des Moines' state-of-the-art Wells Fargo Arena. The new venue is located in the heart of Iowa's capitol city along the banks of the Des Moines River. Along with great sightlines, Wells Fargo Arena, with a seating capacity of more than 17,000 for many events, features 600 club seats, 36 corporate suites, a 180-seat restaurant and state-of-the-art video boards. The seating capacity for hockey will be 15,585.

Wells Fargo Arena, along with Hy-Vee Hall, Veterans Memorial Auditorium and Polk County Convention Complex, form the Iowa Events Center, a premier state-of-the-art multi-purpose facility for sports, concerts, entertainment, trade shows, conventions and exhibits. This $217 million facility totals more than one million square feet. The arena features a panoramic view of the downtown skyline, the Des Moines River and the golden capitol dome. The Wells Fargo Arena is managed by Global Spectrum, the fastest growing firm in the public assembly management field.
