Iowa Cubs News Release

Josh Kroeger and Felix Pie drove in three runs as the Iowa Cubs defeated the Omaha Royals 10-4 Saturday night in front of 11,112 people at Principal Park.

Andres Torres kicked off the first inning with a single off Omaha starter John Bale. Felix Pie followed with a double to left field, driving in Torres for a 1-0 I-Cubs lead. Micah Hoffpauir tripled, driving in his 100th RBI, for Iowa's third straight hit in the inning and a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Kroger connected on his 15th home run of the season to right field to make it a 4-0 game.

Omaha spent the rest of the night chipping away at Iowa's lead, beginning in the third inning with a two-out rally. Gookie Dawkins coaxed a two-out walk from starter Mitch Atkins and Brayan Pena followed with a two-run home run to trim Iowa's lead to 4-2.

Iowa added a run in the fifth as Torres opened the inning with a walk, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Jason Dubois to make it a 5-2 game. Torres finished the night with a pair of hits and three runs.

The Royals welcomed Iowa reliever Jose Ascanio in the fifth with Ryan Shealy roping a one-out double to center field. Shealy scored two batters later on an RBI single by Chad Spann.

The I-Cubs put the game out of reach for the Royals in the seventh inning by sending seven hitters to the plate. Torres ignited the offense again with a triple. He scored two batters later as Dubois, McGehee, and Kroeger connected on a back-to-back-to-back doubles to build up an 8-3 Iowa lead. Kroeger ended the night 2-for-4.

Omaha's Spann added a solo shot in the eighth to make it an 8-4 game but that is as close as it would come. Pie drove in Luis Figueroa and Nate Spears to make it a 10-4 game. Atkins (8-1) earned the win, giving up just two runs on three hits in five innings of work. John Bale (0-3) took the loss after lasting just two innings and giving up four runs on four hits.
