Padres Purchase Contracts Of Geer, Venable; Recall Meredith

PORTLAND, Ore. - The San Diego Padres today purchased the contracts of right-handed pitcher Josh Geer and outfielder Will Venable and recalled right-handed pitcher Cla Meredith from Portland. Additionally, the Beavers announced that outfielder Javis Diaz and right-handed pitchers John Madden and Robert Woodard have been transferred to Portland from Class A Lake Elsinore.

Geer, 25, is 8-9 with a 4.54 ERA, 107 strikeouts and 45 walks in 28 appearances (27 starts) with Portland this season. The right-hander's 166.2 innings pitched are the most in the Pacific Coast League while his 27 starts lead the Beavers and are tied for the most starts in one season by a Portland pitcher since the team returned to the PCL in 2001.

Venable, 25, is hitting .292 with 26 doubles, four triples, 14 home runs, 58 RBIs, 70 runs scored, 44 walks and seven stolen bases in 120 games with Portland this season.

Meredith, 25, was optioned to Portland on Aug. 15. In six relief appearances with the Beavers, he has posted a 2.70 ERA (2er, 6.2ip) with four strikeouts and three walks. Meredith has gone 0-3 with a 3.99 ERA, 39 strikeouts and 22 walks in 60 relief appearances for San Diego this season.

Diaz, 24, is batting .253 with four home runs, 11 doubles, three triples, 31 walks, 69 runs scored, 37 RBIs and 28 stolen bases in 104 games with Lake Elsinore this season.

Madden, 25, is 2-3 with a 3.88 ERA, one save and 45 strikeouts in 52 relief appearances for Lake Elsinore this season.

Woodard, 23, has split the 2008 campaign between Class A Fort Wayne and Lake Elsinore. He was 3-4 with a 3.25 ERA, two saves and 58 strikeouts in 27 games (5 starts) with Fort Wayne and has a 2.43 ERA, 25 strikeouts and no record in 15 appearances (1 start) with the Storm.

The Padres also placed outfielder Scott Hairston on the 15-day disabled list with a torn ligament in his left thumb, outrighted right-handed pitcher Josh Banks to Portland and announced that left-handed pitcher Wil Ledezma has been claimed off outright waivers by Arizona.
