Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- The stage has been set for the Brandon Wheat Kings' Annual Intrasquad game Sunday afternoon at Westman Communications Group Place.

The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. and fans planning to attend are encouraged to use the west main entrance due to renovations currently underway at the Keystone Centre.

Wheat Kings' Main Camp continued Saturday night with Team White scoring a 4-1 victory over Team Black in the final scrimmage of the day.

19-year old netminder Andrew Hayes turned aside all 21 shots that he faced to lead the winners. Entering his third season with the Wheat Kings, the Sherwood Park, Alberta product is coming off a solid season that saw him compile an impressive 30-11-2-1 record, a 2.84 goals against average, a .901 save percentage and three shutouts.

Scoring for the White Team Saturday night were Michael Ferland, Brayden Schenn, Kjell Reid and 15-year old defenceman Eric Roy, Brandon's first pick and 18th overall selection in this year's Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.

"He doesn't look 15," Wheat Kings' coach and general manager Kelly McCrimmon said of the 6'2" 164 lb Roy to the Brandon Sun this week. "He's big, he skates well, he's poised and really doesn't seem to be fazed or rattled by any aspect of training camp so far and he's played very well."

18-year old defenceman Brodie Melnychuk, who is scheduled to attend San Jose's National Hockey League training camp in September, scored the lone goal for Team Black.

Melnychuk is one of nine players on this year's roster off to NHL camps this fall. The others include Schenn (Los Angeles), Jordan Hale (Ottawa), Colby Robak (Florida), Scott Glennie (Dallas), Matt Calvert (Columbus), Jay Fehr (Minnesota) as well as Europeans Alexander Urbom (New Jersey) and Toni Rajala (Edmonton).

Rajala or Fehr have not been able to participate in Wheat Kings' Camp this week due to injury. However Rajala continues to recover from a knee injury in his native Finland and could be on his way to Oilers' rookie camp next weekend.

Following Sunday's Intrasquad game, several cuts will be made as the Wheat Kings will begin preparations for their 2009 pre-season opener Friday night against the visiting Regina Pats.
