Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (July 12, 2011) -- The Kannapolis Intimidators rode an eight-run fourth inning past the Rome Braves, 10-4, on Tuesday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in the first game of a four-game series. The Intimidators sent 14 batters to the plate in the big inning.
Trailing 3-0 with the bases loaded and one-out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Juan Silverio's two-run double began a hit parade that resulted in eight runs, turning a three-run deficit into a five-run lead. Drew Lee catapulted Kannapolis ahead with a two-run single to right field, giving the Intimidators a 4-3 lead. Miguel Gonzalez and Kenny Gilbert singled to load the bases, and Carlos Sanchez drove in Lee when he reached base on a fielding error.
Marcus Semien drew a bases-loaded walk making it 6-3 Kannapolis, chasing Rome starter Caleb Brewer from the game. Brady Shoemaker added a two-run single off reliever Carlos Perez to cap the eight-run inning, the second largest scoring inning for the Intimidators this season.
Brewer (5-7) took the loss in 3 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Kannapolis starting pitcher Matt Heidenreich recovered from a three- run first inning to keep the Braves off the scoreboard over the next five innings, giving the offense a chance to get to work. Heidenreich (7-5) tossed his ninth quality start of the season, going six innings and allowing three runs on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts in a winning effort.
Rome's Matt Lipka led off the game with a solo home run (1) down the left field line, and Chris Garcia and Robert Hefflinger added RBI- singles in the first inning for an early 3-0 lead over Kannapolis.
Reid Kelly struck out five batters over two innings of relief, and Phil Negus pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close out the game for Kannapolis.
The Intimidators continue the four-game series against the Braves on Wednesday with LHP Spencer Arroyo (5-5, 3.41 ERA) facing RHP Gary Moran (2-0, 2.33). For ticket information, call the box office at (704) 932-3267 or visit www.IntimidatorsBaseball.com.
