August 14, 2007 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
Kannapolis, NC - Tuesday night?s game lasted only nine innings, but it still took nearly as long as Monday?s 11-innning affair. The Kannapolis Intimidators, despite scoring 11 runs, could not pull out a win against the Hagerstown Suns, losing 14-11 at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. The game lasted three hours and 17 minutes, putting the total time of play for the last two nights for the Intimidators (24-27, 56-65) and the Suns (17-34, 46-72) at seven hours and four minutes.
When the two teams scored Tuesday night, the runs came in bunches.
The Intimidators scored six runs on three hits in the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead. Hagerstown starter Jeff Mandel hit two batters, walked another, and gave up two singles and a three-run home run to John Shelby to account for the six runs. Shelby?s homer was his 11th of the season.
Hagerstown bounced back in the top of the fifth to score five runs (one earned) off Kannapolis starter Carlos Perez to cut the Kannapolis lead to one. Perez recorded just one out in the sixth and left with the bases loaded for newcomer Joe Torres to clean up. Torres allowed four walks in .2 innings and Hagerstown led 9-6 after the top of the sixth. The Suns pushed the lead to 13-6 with four more runs in the seventh.
The Intimidators, after giving up 13 straight runs, decided to show a little fight, getting five runs in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by Chris Carter?s two-run home run.
The Suns added an insurance run in the ninth to claim a three-run victory. Reliever Josh Wilkie allowed just one hit in the final two innings and struck out three to earn his seventh save of the year.
Perez (3-6) took the loss, allowing eight runs (four earned) on 10 hits in 5.1 innings. He has allowed 37 hits in his last 22.1 innings. Mandel (3-5) got the win, despite allowing six earned runs in five innings.
The final game of the series is Wednesday afternoon. Game time is set for 12:05 pm.
