International League Names Players of the Week

Published on August 27, 2012 under International League (IL1) News Release

The International League announced today that Toledo center fielder Justin Henry and Syracuse pitcher John Lannan have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from August 20-26. Lannan is the third Syracuse pitcher in the past five weeks to be named IL Pitcher of the Week (Tanner Roark, Zach Duke) and fourth Chief overall this season to win a weekly award (Corey Brown), while Henry is the second player from Toledo this season to be so honored and the first since April (Brad Eldred).

JUSTIN HENRY, Toledo Mud Hens IL BATTER OF THE WEEK

Toledo's leadoff hitter Justin Henry paced the International League last week with 14 hits and a .538 batting average, nearly 100 points higher than his closest competitor. Henry collected multiple hits in five different games and sparked his Mud Hens to a five-game winning streak along the way. Henry's hot streak included a stretch of three consecutive three-hit games and four consecutive games with at least one run scored. Henry, who also collected four walks and two stolen bases, was 2nd in the IL with a .581 on-base percentage last week. For the season, Henry is now 3rd in the League with 135 hits.

27-year-old Justin Henry is in his sixth season as a professional player, spent entirely within the Detroit farm system. He had played just 50 games at the Triple-A level before the 2012 season. Henry is a native of Houston, Texas.

JOHN LANNAN, Syracuse Chiefs IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Syracuse southpaw John Lannan turned in his best outing of the season Saturday night at Gwinnett. The veteran shut out the G-Braves to win a pitcher's duel with Julio Teheran, the reigning IL Most Valuable Pitcher, by a 1-0 score in a game in which both teams managed just three hits. Lannan needed a mere 87 pitches (60 strikes) to complete his 9.0-inning masterpiece, and he faced just two batters over the minimum to win the two-hour and 15-minute contest. Lannan had won once in his previous eight Triple-A starts before recording his first shutout of the season. He is 2-0 in two spot starts with Washington during the same stretch.

27-year-old John Lannan is in his sixth season as a professional pitcher, spent entirely within the Washington organization. He has 130 starts under his belt as a Major League pitcher, with a record of 40-51. Lannan is a native of Manhasset, New York.
