Inter Miami CF Set for U.S. Open Cup Semifinals Clash against FC Cincinnati

Inter Miami CF is back with some 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup midweek action, with the team traveling to Ohio to face FC Cincinnati in the semifinals of the competition on Wednesday, Aug. 23. Kick off at TQL is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Historic First Official Piece of Silverware

Inter Miami will take the pitch in Cincinnati after a historic weekend for the Club, having won the 2023 Leagues Cup title by defeating Nashville SC in a dramatic penalty shootout in the final on Saturday to clinch the First Team's first official trophy.

The historic final saw Inter Miami win the team's first official title, extend the longest win streak in Club history to seven and secure a spot directly in the Round of 16 in the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup. Inter Miami secured the first First Team's first trophy by winning all of its seven consecutive matches en route to the 2023 Leagues Cup title, defeating Cruz Azul, Atlanta United, Orlando City SC, FC Dallas, Charlotte FC, Philadelphia Union and lastly Nashville.

Individual Honors

Individually, Inter Miami players also took the spotlight, with with captain Lionel Messi becoming the player with most trophies in the history of the sport with 44 and collecting Leagues Cup Best Player and Top Scorer awards. Additionally, with his goal in the Leagues Cup final, the Argentine has now scored at least once in each of his seven appearances for the team.

Goalkeeper Drake Callender, meanwhile, earned Man of the Match honors for his stellar performance in the final as well as the Leagues Cup Best Goalkeeper award.

Inter Miami in 2023 U.S. Open Cup

Inter Miami will make its fifth appearance in this year's edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup against FC Cincinnati, marking the first time the team reaches the semifinals stage of the competition. The team now needs two more wins to win the second trophy in Club history.

The Herons reached the semifinals of the cup by defeating Miami FC on penalties on the road in the Third Round, knocking out Charleston Battery in the Round of 32 and Nashville SC in the Round of 16 in home games at DRV PNK Stadium, and winning against Birmingham Legion FC in the quarterfinals.

Open Cup Champions on the Roster

Inter Miami currently has three former Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup winners on its roster in defender DeAndre Yedlin, who won it in 2014 with Seattle Sounders FC, midfielder Victor Ulloa, who helped FC Dallas clinch the title in 2016, and forward Josef Martínez, who won it in 2019 with Atlanta United.

Scouting FC Cincinnati

The Ohio-based side will enter the match after most recently falling 3-0 on the road against the Columbus Crew in MLS regular season action.

FC Cincinnati reached the U.S. Open Cup semifinals by knocking out Louisville City FC in the Third Round, New York City FC in the Round of 32, the New York Red Bulls in the Round of 16 and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC in quarterfinals.

What's Next?

If Inter Miami wins, it would advance to the final and take on the winner of the semifinals clash between the Houston Dynamo and Real Salt Lake on Sept. 27. If the team advances to the final, it would either travel to face Real Salt Lake or host Houston Dynamo in the U.S. Open Cup final.
