NEW YORK - Inter Miami CF forward Luis Suárez was voted the Major League Soccer Player of the Matchday for Matchday 3 of the 2024 MLS season.
Suárez scored two goals and added two assists as part of the club's 5-0 rivalry victory over Orlando City SC on Saturday, March 2. The Uruguayan forward became the first player in club history to record multiple goals and multiple assists in a single regular-season match. Since the start of the 2023 season, Suárez joins the Philadelphia Union's Dániel Gazdag (2/25/2023) and Atlanta United's Thiago Almada (3/18/2023) as the only players with multiple goals and assists in a single game. Suárez scored both of his goals within the first 11 minutes of the contest, becoming the fastest player in club history to score a brace from the beginning of a match.
Miami scored just four minutes into the match when new signing Julian Gressel found Suárez in the middle of the 18-yard-box, who then thrashed a one-timed finish past the Orlando City goalkeeper (Watch Here). Suárez and Gressel combined again for the second goal, playing an intricate passing combination before the forward placed his finish in the far corner to make it 2-0 in the 11th minute (Watch Here). Suárez turned provider in the 29 th minute as he beat the offside trap and found Robert Taylor alone to pass his effort into the opening net (Watch Here). After Miami made it 4-0, the Uruguayan international added his second assist of the match in the 62nd minute, lofting a cross to the back post, which Lionel Messi headed home to complete the victory (Watch Here).
Suárez becomes the first Inter Miami player to be named MLS Player of the Matchday since Leonardo Campana did so for his performance on Matchday 31 of the 2023 season. He is also the first Uruguayan player to win the award since Diego Rossi took home the honor in Matchday 9 of 2020 for LAFC.
Inter Miami look to continue their unbeaten start to the MLS regular season when they host CF Montréal at Chase Stadium on Sunday, March 10 (5 p.m. ET, MLS Season Pass on Apple TV).
The MLS Player of the Matchday for Matchday 3 was selected by media voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprised the entire vote for Matchday 3. NASR consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
