INSIDE-THE-PARK HOMER HELPS DUCKS DERAIL REVOLUTION

Long Island takes series opener behind four-run fifth inning

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 28, 2017) - The Long Island Ducks defeated the York Revolution 5-4 on Monday night in the opener of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

After escaping jams in the first and second innings, Ducks starter Matt Larkins allowed a run in the third on a sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of Dayron Varona. Long Island responded with a four-run fifth inning off Revolution starter Jared Gaynor to go in front 4-1. A two-run single to right by Jordan Hinshaw and a two-run inside-the-park home run from Delta Cleary Jr. did the damage.

The Revolution closed to within 4-3 in the sixth on a two-out, two-run single to right by Jared Mitchell. However, Matt Marsh retired Isaias Tejeda to strand the bases loaded.

The Ducks pushed across an insurance run in the seventh when Dan Lyons walked and later scored from third on a passed ball with two outs.

It stayed 5-3 until the ninth when Telvin Nash hit a two-out solo homer to left off reliever Amalio Diaz, closing the gap to one. Diaz followed it up though with a strikeout of Varona to end the game.

Larkins (8-6) picked up the win, pitching five and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on six hits and five walks while striking out six. Gaynor (1-1) took the loss, yielding four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks in six innings with two strikeouts. Diaz collected his 14th save despite allowing a run in the ninth, as he struck out two.

Hinshaw and Cleary Jr.

each had two hits, two RBI and a run scored to pace the Flock offensively.
