Inland Empire 66ers News Release
Lancaster, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino completed a three-game sweep of the Lancaster JetHawks with a 4-2 win and in the process secured the club's first four-game win-streak on the year. It was also the 66ers (17-17) first sweep of an opponent and moved the Sixers alone atop the Cal League's Southern Division standings.
Jared Walsh homered to give the Sixers a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning against Lancaster starter Brandon Gold (3-2). Walsh's dinger marked his third consecutive game in the series with a homer; he now has eight to lead the team. The lead was short-lived as Lancaster (16-18) first baseman Roberto Ramos drilled a solo shot in the bottom of the second to tie the game 1-1 against IE starter Joe Gatto (4-1); it was Ramos' 11th homer of 2018 and the lone run that Gatto allowed in six innings as the righty gave up three hits, a walk, a hit batter and fanned six. Walsh opened the fourth with a double and came home on a RBI double from Brandon Sandoval (his second two-bagger of the game). Sandoval later scored on Julian Leon's two-out RBI single for a 3-1 lead. Luis Rengifo, who had tripled in the first to extend his hit streak to eight games, singled to open the fifth. He eventually was knocked on Walsh's sac fly for a 4-1 advantage. The JetHawks trimmed the lead to 4-2 by the eighth and had the bases loaded when Aaron Cox (SV,1) came out of the pen and struck out Willie Abreu to keep Inland Empire in front. Cox allowed a single in the ninth but nothing else to secure the game and the sweep.
The 66ers open a home series versus Stockton on Friday at 7:05 pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com.
