Inland Empire 66ers News Release
San Bernardino, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers led 2-0 with one out in the top of the ninth on Friday night at San Manuel Stadium but could not close out the Modesto Nuts as the visiting club got a game-tying two run homer from Drew Weeks. Modesto would eventually push across a run in the 11th inning to down the Sixers in game one of a three-game set.
Neither starting pitcher figured in the decision but both pitched well as Jared Ruxer gave the Sixers five shutout frames allowing just two hits with three walks and five Ks. Parker French tossed seven strong innings allowing one run for Modesto on eight hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
The 66ers got a run in the second when Taylor Ward singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. He scored on Jeff Boehm's RBI single to make it 1-0. Boehm finished the contest with a pair of singles and two walks. Inland Empire made it 2-0 in the eighth as they pushed across an insurance run when David Fletcher doubled off Modesto (47-71, 21-27) reliever Troy Neiman. Jared Foster then doubled him home.
Inland Empire (40-78, 17-31) southpaw Winston Lavendier tossed a perfect eighth but walked Forrest Wall to open the ninth. After a lineout he allowed a Drew Weeks' game-tying two-run homer to left. In the top of the 11th IE reliever Zach Hartman (0-2) gave up a double to Weeks to open the frame. With one down Troy Stein drilled a RBI double off the wall in center to score Weeks and give the Nuts the 3-2 lead. Inland Empire fought back in the bottom of the frame against Nuts' closer Luis Niebla as with two outs Boehm drew a walk. He moved to second on Josh Delph's single. Delph tallied his season-best three hits on the evening. Niebla was able to get Ayendy Perez to pop out to left to end the game and secure his 11th save in 11 tries. Nieman (5-3) was credited with the win. Weeks finished with 3-for-5 and was a triple short of the cycle.
The series continues Saturday at 7:05 pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com and 1570 AM KPRO.
