Indy Eleven Win Streak Continues

May 21, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Indy Eleven News Release

INDIANAPOLIS - Indy Eleven pushed its home winning streak to four games and its undefeated streak at Carroll Stadium to eight courtesy of a 2-0 victory over New York Red Bulls II at IUPUI Carroll Stadium. A Red Bulls II own goal and forward Jonas Fjeldberg's second goal in as many games, both in the first half, were more than enough for Indy Eleven (5W-3L-2D, 17 pts., 7th in Eastern Conf.) to return to the win column, the result giving Indy a fifth win from its last six outings.

A frantic start saw quality looks for both teams inside the first quarter-hour, starting with Red Bulls II striker Jordan Adebayo-Smith getting off a shot that forced Eleven goalkeeper Elliot Panicco into his first save just three minutes in. On the other end Indy forward Manuel Arteaga saw a 6th minute effort saved, and while Fjeldberg swept home rebound the finish was nullified by the offside flag. New York midfielder Jeremy Rafanello nearly made his former side pay in the 14th minute by picking off a pass at the top of the area and firing a shot that clanged off the right post and out of harm's way.

The match settled down as the half hour mark neared, which is when Indiana's Team took the lead. Captain Neveal Hackshaw's long throw-in to the six was nodded backwards by O'Vante Mullings, forcing Juan Castillo into another header that found its way past New York netminder Derrek Chan. In the 42nd minute Fjeldberg indeed found paydirt and doubled Indy's lead on a breakaway chance set up by Noah Powder's perfect 50-yard through ball from the edge of the defensive third.

The second half saw Panicco pressed into action within the opening minute, and he did well to race to the top of his area and stop a breakaway opportunity before seeing Adebayo-Smith fortunately miss wide on the follow-up attempt. The chances were much more sporadic to follow, but Fjeldberg had a great look at a brace in the 57th minute off Arteaga's back post cross, only to see his forceful header blocked out for a corner. While New York retained more possession in the stanza, the Boys in Blue professionally saw out the final half hour without much danger, although a Rafanello blast from distance in the 81st minute that whistled wide did serve notice.

As substitutions for both sides cycled through, Indy Eleven Head Coach Mark Lowry took the opportunity to give two-time USL Championship MVP Solomon Asante his debut in blue, the Ghanian entering in the 79th minute. It took only eight minutes for Asante to provide some of the exceptional set-piece service he's known for with a corner to the penalty spot, but Arteaga steered his crashing header just over the bar. Panicco and company held firm through stoppage time to give Indy a comfortable return to the win column and a second clean sheet in its last three contests.

Indy Eleven returns to action next Saturday, May 28, with the renewal of its annual Racing Indy Game at Carroll Stadium. Fans are encouraged to make it a full day in downtown Indy, as the special 4:00 p.m. ET kickoff will allow patrons to experience both the 500 Festival Parade (starting at noon) and the Eleven's contest against New Mexico United to follow.
