"The visit of Morelia from Mexico to Indianapolis is a major event - a great success for the Latino community in general and the Mexican community in particular since it is the first time that a team from the top division of Mexican soccer will come to play in Indianapolis," said Jorge Sanchez Cataño, Lead Consul at the Mexican Consulate in Indianapolis. "Surely many fans of Latino and Mexican soccer will be very excited to be able to witness this game against Indy Eleven, which without a doubt has been extremely successful in this city."
Founded in 1924, Morelia has been one of Mexican soccer's steadiest franchises, playing in the top division every year since 1981. The club, currently coached by manager Roberto Hernandez, features a handful of players with national team credentials, including Panamanian captain defender Felipe Baloy, Mexican defender Joel Huiqui and a pair of players that helped Mexico to the 2011 FIFA Under-17 World Cup title in defender Carlos Guzman and midfielder Armando Zamorano.
Monarcas Morelia, which is the largest club based in the Mexican state of Michoacán, has one first division title to its credit after winning the Invierno (Winter) 2000 crown, and has also finished as the runner-up three times since 2002. More recently, after winning the Copa MX Apertura 2013 tournament, Morelia defeated UANL Tigres in the 2014 Supercopa MX series to earn one of Mexico's coveted three spots in the 2015 Copa Libertadores, the club South American federation's club championship. It was the third time Morelia had qualified for the prestigious tournament along with its appearances in 2002 and 2010. American fans might also remember Morelia as the team that defeated the New England Revolution in 2010 for the title of the last version of the SuperLiga tournament, which pitted Liga MX and Major League Soccer clubs against each other.
