Buffalo Bisons News Release

The Cleveland Indians announced today that they have signed former-Bisons pitcher Paul Shuey to a minor league contract. Shuey, who pitched in five seasons with the Herd from 1995-1999, will also be invited to major league spring training camp.

Shuey, 34, spent 11-plus seasons in the Cleveland Indians organization from 1992-2002, including parts of five seasons with the Bisons. In 58 games with Buffalo, Shuey was 4-4 with a 1.88 ERA and 17 saves in 81.0 innings. His best season with the team was in 1996 when he went 3-2 with a 0.81 ERA and four saves in 19 games. That year, he also struck out 57 batters in just 33.1 innings of work, holding opponents to a .126 batting average.

With the Indians, Shuey pitched in 361 games from 1994-2002, going 34-21 with a 3.60 ERA and 21 saves. On July 28, 2002, the Tribe traded the reliever to the Los Angeles Dodgers for current Bisons pitcher Francisco Cruceta and two other pitchers. Shuey missed the entire 2004 season for the Dodgers due to rupturing a tendon in his right thumb during spring training. While on rehab for his thumb, he injured his hip that required season-ending surgery on July 28.

Overall, Shuey owns a career major league record of 45-27 with a 3.57 ERA and 22 saves with the Indians and Dodgers.
