Indianapolis Indians News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Right-hander Tyler Clippard allowed just one run on three hits over 6.1 innings and Columbus pounded out seven runs in the eighth to post a 10-2 win over Indianapolis Friday night at Cooper Stadium.
The Clippers improve to 53-45 on the season and 24-23 at home, while the Indians fall to 46-54 overall and 22-27 on the road. The outcome ends Columbus' six-game losing streak and the Tribe's two-game winning streak.
Clippard (6.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) picked up the win to improve to 6-7 on the season. He gave up only one extra-base hit and allowed only one runner past second base in his second longest outing of the season.
Columbus plated all the runs they would need in the sixth inning on four hits and two sacrifice flys.
3B Ryan Zimmerman and 1B Luis Jimenez opened the frame with singles before 2B Pokey Reese tied the score at one with a sacrifice fly. LF Leonard Davis followed with an RBI triple to plate Jimenez and then trotted home on a sacrifice fly by C David Wallace.
The Clippers then broke the game open with seven runs on seven hits in the eighth inning.
The first three runs came plateward on a two-run double by pinch hitter Yurendell de Caster and another run scoring two-bagger by SS Jemel Spearman. CF Roger Bernadina and 1B Larry Broadway then drove in two more with singles before Reese capped the inning with a two-run double.
Bernadina (4-for-5, 1 R, 1 RBI), Jimenez (2-for-4, 1 R) and Reese (2-for-3, 1 R, 3 RBI) all turned in multi-hit performances for the Clippers. Every Columbus starter except Clippard scored at least one run and seven different individuals recorded at least one RBI.
Indianapolis LHP Corey Hamman (6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO) threw five scoreless innings to start the game, but took the loss to drop to 0-1 on the season. RHP Romulo Sanchez (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB) threw a scoreless seventh in his first action since being optioned to Indianapolis from Pittsburgh on July 17.
The Tribe plated the first run of the game in the sixth when C Michel Hernandez led off with a double and eventually came around to score on a single by CF Andrew McCutchen. SS Brian Bixler later added an RBI groundout to bring in the Indians second run.
Tribe OF Nyjer Morgan saw his team-best 17 game hitting streak come to an end with an 0-for-4 effort from the plate.
The teams continue their four-game series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Jimmy Barthmaier is scheduled to start for Indianapolis, while RHP Marco Estrada is expected to get the nod for Columbus.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
