Indianapolis Indians News Release
ALLENTOWN, PA - Fifteen hits - three from both Austin Meadows and Jacob Stallings - led the Indianapolis Indians to an 8-4 victory over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Thursday night at Coca-Cola Park. The offensive onslaught featured 13 singles and two doubles, with Indy scoring its eight runs over the first five frames.
Indianapolis (25-20) greeted the reigning International League Pitcher of the Year, Jake Thompson, with two runs in the first, three in the second and single tallies in the third, fourth and fifth.
In the opening inning, Meadows collected his first of three singles on the night and moved to second on a passed ball. After Max Moroff worked a walk, a ground ball to Howie Kendrick at third off the bat of Eric Wood resulted in a forceout of Meadows. Kendrick attempted to complete the double play, but his throw across the diamond skipped past Rhys Hoskins, allowing Moroff to race around from first and score on the play. Erich Weiss then plated Wood with a two-out single to right.
After Stallings singled to start the second, Joey Terdoslavich ripped a run-scoring double to make it 3-0. Christopher Bostick pushed the lead to four with a single to left, and he later scored on an RBI groundout back to the mound by Wood.
Tribe pitcher Clay Holmes sailed through the first two innings, recording three strikeouts. He helped himself in the third with a sacrifice bunt that scored Phil Gosselin from third base. A sacrifice fly by Wood in the fourth put Indy up 7-0, and Holmes drove in his second RBI of the game with a two-out knock in the fifth.
Lehigh Valley (31-15) finally broke through against Holmes in the sixth, scoring three times with two away. Nick Williams and Jorge Alfaro notched RBI singles in the frame to bring the IronPigs within five at 8-3.
Hector Gomez homered off Angel Sanchez to open the home half of the eighth, but the right-hander settled in to record the final six outs and seal Indy's 18th win in the month of May.
Holmes (3-1) earned the win with six innings of three-run ball. His counterpart, Thompson (2-4), took the loss after getting tagged for eight runs (six earned) on 13 hits over five frames.
The Indians continue their seven-game road trip with the series opener of a four-game set Friday night at Rochester. The Tribe will send right-hander Edgar Santana (1-0, 0.36) to the mound, opposite Red Wings right-hander Nick Tepesch (1-2, 3.16). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., and the broadcast can be heard on Fox Sports 97.5 and AM 1260.
