Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Four Tribe hurlers combined to allow just one run on four hits, while third baseman Neil Walker and left fielder Tagg Bozied combined for four hits and four RBI to lead the Indianapolis Indians past the Columbus Clippers 5-1 on Monday night at Victory Field.
With the win the Indians improve to 63-66 overall and 33-31 at home, while the Clippers fall to 52-76 overall and 25-38 on the road with the loss. The win for Indianapolis evens the current series at one game apiece and moves the season series to 9-10 still in favor of Columbus.
Indianapolis starter Brad Lincoln (5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO) and relievers Jon Meloan (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 SO), Corey Hamman (1.0 IP, 1 SO) and Jeff Sues (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 SO) combined to allow just four hits, while walking only one and striking out 10. With the win, Lincoln earned his third victory over his last three starts, while Meloan and Hamman each earned holds and Sues worked out of a ninth inning jam to finish off the victory for the Tribe.
While the Tribe pitching staff combined to hold down the Columbus offense, Walker and Bozied led the Indians' run-scoring attack which pushed across five runs on eight hits.
Indianapolis jumped out to the quick lead with a run in the bottom of the first as 2B Pedro Lopez lined a one out single, moved to third on a base hit by RF Brian Myrow and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Clement. The RBI for Clement gave him at least one run batted in nine of his last 12 games and propelled the Tribe to the early 1-0 lead.
Bozied and Walker then took over the Tribe offensive attack as the duo combined to drive in each of the club's next four runs. The scoring began in the fourth where following a walk by Clement, Bozied drove a double to center and then came plateward along with Clement when Walker ripped his team-leading 30th double of the season.
Then after Columbus plated their only run of the game on SS Niuman Romero's first home run of the season in the sixth inning, Bozied put the game out of reach with a long ball of his own in the eighth. The clutch two-run homer by Bozied was his fourth of the season and brought home Lopez for the second time in the contest.
Bozied (2-for-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI), Walker (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Lopez (2-for-3, 2 R) all turned in multi-hit performances for the Tribe, while only DH Stephen Head (2-for-3) posted a multi-hit effort for Columbus. With his two base knocks Bozied has now reached base in 18 of his last 20 games and has also collected 27 hits and 16 runs over 21 games in the month of August.
Also remaining red hot for the Indians is Lopez, who has now collected multiple hits in eight of his last 10 games during which time he has collected 20 hits and is batting .476 (20-for-42). The right handed slugger has also scored 10 runs over his last 10 games, scoring at least once in eight of those contests.
Columbus starter Ryan Edell (7.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO) was a tough luck loser yet again for the Clippers as he allowed just three runs over seven solid innings, yet still took the loss to drop to 0-5 so far this year. In his previous outing against the Indians, Edell also took the loss despite allowing just two runs in five innings of work.
In relief of Edell, former Indianapolis Indians' LHP Michael Tejera (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) struggled for Columbus as he allowed two runs on one hit and a walk in just one inning of work.
Indianapolis will continue their four-game series against division rival Columbus on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. RHP Daniel McCutchen is scheduled to start for the Indians, while RHP Ken Ray is expected to get the nod for the Clippers.
