INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Gerrit Cole, the top prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates minor league system, showed why he is in Triple-A in only his second year of pro baseball on Saturday night. The right-hander pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, leading the Indianapolis Indians (17-7) to a 4-1 win over the Gwinnett Braves (12-12) in the opener of the four-game series at Victory Field.

The Indians broke a scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the second off of G-Braves' starter Yohan Flande. Jerry Sands drew a one out walk off of Flande and moved to third on a single to right-center from Tony Sanchez. Ivan De Jesus, Jr. would then plate Sands with a sacrifice fly to right for a 1-0 lead.

Indianapolis added two more runs in the third against Flande. Josh Harrison drew a walk and scored from first on a double to right by Matt Hague. Jordy Mercer followed with a single scoring Hague from second, raising the lead to 3-0.

The Indians tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. De Jesus singled and moved to second as Cole reached first on a fielder's choice. Darren Ford drove in De Jesus from second with a single to left.

Gwinnett's only run game in the top of the sixth against Cole. Jose Constanza led off with a walk and scored from first on a double to deep right-center by Corey Wimberly. Wimberly's fifth double in five games played on the road trip cut the deficit to 4-1, but the G-Braves would get no closer.

Cole (W, 2-1) went seven innings, gave up three hits and one earned run. He walked four and struck out five. Veteran right-hander Jose Contreras worked a scoreless, hitless eighth inning with three strikeouts. Righty Vic Black (S, 5) worked a scoreless ninth inning with no hits and two strikeouts.

Flande (L, 1-1) went four innings and was touched for five hits and four runs. He walked three and struck out one. Right-hander David Carpenter pitched three innings out of the Gwinnett bullpen. He allowed three hits, no runs and struck out two. Left-hander Cole McCurry worked a scoreless eighth with two hits and one strikeout.

At the plate, the G-Braves' three hits were from Wimberly, Constanza and Luis Nunez. The hit by Constanza, a single in the third, increased his hitting streak to 10 games.

The Indians collected 10 hits on the night. Hague was 3-for-4 and both Mercer and Alex Presley were 2-for-4.
