Indiana Fever News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Fever has announced the signing of center Ziomara Morrison and forward Jennifer George, it was announced today by Fever President and General Manager Kelly Krauskopf.
Morrison is a 6-4 center from Chile who signed a free agent contract after previously playing in the WNBA with the San Antonio Stars. She played 30 games as a WNBA rookie in 2012, but was waived by the club during training camp last season.
Morrison is a member of the Chilean National Team and has played professionally in Europe since 2005. Currently, she is averaging 16.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game for Ceyan Bid in Turkey. Morrison, 25, finished her winter season ranked seventh in the league in scoring and sixth in rebounds. She also averaged one block per game in what is often regarded as the most competitive league in Europe.
George, a 6-0 forward, was a third-round draft pick of the Fever in 2013, but chose not to play professionally last summer. She has inked a training camp contract with Indiana after playing with Aros Leon in Spain last winter. George was a force in the Spanish LF2 league, ranking sixth in the circuit in scoring (17.8 points) and second in rebounds (12.0), steals (2.5) and blocks (1.6).
A college senior in 2013 from the University of Florida, George paced the Gators to a 22-15 record and a berth in the Women's National Invitational Tournament. A second team All-SEC pick as a senior and a first-teamer as a junior, she was also a member of the SEC All-Defensive first team, George averaged 11.0 points and led the Gators with 7.5 rebounds. She also led Florida with 56 blocked shots (1.6).
The Fever opens training camp April 27, prior to hosting a preseason game with the Washington Mystics on Monday, May 5 (12:00 p.m.). The Fever opens the regular season at Chicago on May 16 before hosting its home opener against the Atlanta Dream on Saturday, May 17 (7:00 p.m.)
A WNBA playoff participant in nine straight seasons and 10 times since 2002, the Indiana Fever has reached at least the conference finals six times in the past nine years - including WNBA Finals appearances in 2009 and 2012. Just two seasons ago, Indiana capped the 2012 campaign as the champions of women's basketball, beating the Minnesota Lynx in the WNBA Finals. The Fever begins its 2014 season at Chicago on Friday, May 16, and hosts a home opener Saturday, May 17 against Atlanta (7:00 p.m.).
