Cedar Rapids RoughRiders News Release
Cedar Rapids, Iowa- Torey Krug scored with just 15.5 seconds left in regulation Saturday night to give the Indiana Ice a dramatic 7-6 game five win over the host RoughRiders, a defeat that ended the Riders' season.
In the wake of Krug's goal from the right wing circle the Ice would hold on to win their opening round Clark Cup Playoff series with the Riders three games to two.
The Riders had rallied from a 6-4 third period deficit to send the game into the final moments deadlocked. Just 56 seconds after two quick Ice goals had suddenly produced the two goal Indiana cushion, Kyle Flanagan wristed home his second goal of the game from the left wing circle to cut the gap to 6-5 at the three minute mark of the third. At 11:23 Mike Seidel went on a stunning solo rush to tie game with his second goal of the evening.
The Riders needed to battle back after the Ice shattered a 4-4 tie by scoring twice in a minute. Brandon Richardson, who finished with four points, backhanded the second of his two goals in from the left wing circle to make it 5-4 64 seconds into the third period. The Indiana advantage suddenly doubled when Will McDonald fired in the sixth Indiana goal from the right wing circle at 2:04.
The first two periods were nearly as whiplash-inducing as the climactic third. In the second period alone, the Ice ripped off three straight goals to forge in front 4-3 only for the Riders' Tobias Nilsson-Roos to knot the game up again by scoring his second goal of the contest from close range with just over a minute left in the period. Nilsson-Roos halted an Indiana outburst that started when Richardson snapped the puck home from the slot to narrow what had been a two-goal Rider edge to 3-2 at 12:06 of the second. The Ice equalized when Ben Albertson finished off a 3-on-2 rush at 16:34 and then took the lead for the first time just over a minute and a half later when Brent Gwidt buried a rebound.
It was the Riders who seized the initiative in the first period. Cedar Rapids first broke on top while on the power play when Seidel pounced on a loose puck in the goalmouth at 13:21 of the opening period. The Ice replied while on the man advantage themselves at 15:28. Mike Cichy, who would also pick up two assists, tied the score from the slot. Just 26 seconds later Flanagan buried Jeff Costello's goalmouth feed to put the Riders back on top. The Riders were once more up a man when Nilsson-Roos extended the lead to 3-1 from doorstep with just 1:12 left in the first.
