PITTSBURGH, PA - The Charlotte Independence (8-6-4) on Saturday night opened their four-match road trip with a 3-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (2-12-4) at Highmark Stadium. The result marked the first win for Charlotte since June 24 and the fourth consecutive loss for Pittsburgh.

The game picked up quickly and both teams had several goal-scoring opportunities in the first half. In the first five minutes Kevin Kerr took a strong shot, but it was deflected by Independence defender Patrick Slogic. Five minutes later the Independence came up with a chance of their own off a dangerous cross that was sent in by Joel Johnson, but it was punched away by Riverhounds keeper Mauricio Vargas.

After a couple of missed chances from the Riverhounds, the Independence were able to take the lead in the 30th minute. The goal was scored by Caleb Calvert on a ball he sent in that looked to be a cross but slipped in near post. In the 40th minute John Berner made a hard dive for the Wells Fargo Save of the Game to keep the lead. In the final minutes of the first half Lewis Hilton increased the lead to 2-0 for the Independence with a quick and powerful shot from outside the box. Neither team was able to find a good rhythm to start the second, and there were few opportunities for either side. As the half went on the Independence picked up speed after Berner came up with a big save in the 74th minute. Jorge Herrera and Calvert earned back-to-back chances off their heads in the 79th and 81st minutes, but couldn't quite convert. As the game went into stoppage time the Independence kept pushing, and in the last minute Herrera came up with a third goal ending the game on a high note for the Independence.

The Independence (8-6-4) remain on the road this weekend to face FC Montreal (2-15-1), who are coming off a 3-1 loss to the Rochester Rhinos. Kickoff for FC Montreal and the Independence will be on July 31 at 3:00 p.m. ET.
