Independence Day Fireworks Not Enough to Spark for AquaSox Offense

EVERETT, WA: A near sellout crowd packed Funko Field on Monday night to witness Independence Day baseball, a rehab assignment for Seattle Mariner Kyle Lewis and the start of a six-game home stand against the Vancouver Canadians. The momentum in this game fell into the hands of the Canadians early with brilliant starting pitching and aggressive offense as the Frogs dropped the series opener 8-4.
Lewis arrived in Everett after starting his rehab assignment with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers last night. He started the game as the DH and batted second for the AquaSox. Tonight, he was able to muster an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
Bryce Miller got the start on the mound for Everett and quickly gave up a leadoff triple to Vancouver right fielder Steward Berroa to start the game. Shortstop Addison Barger then sent a fastball over the wall for a two-run home run and a quick 2-0 lead for the Canadians. Miller was able to strikeout catcher Zach Britton on a check-swing, who was then ejected for arguing the call.
The Canadians weren't done just yet as Damiano Palmegiani sent a 373-foot home run to left field, extending Vancouver's first inning lead to 3-0.
Vancouver starting pitcher Nick Frasso was dealing tonight. Frasso got AquaSox shortstop Noelvi Marte to pop out in the bottom of the first and then proceeded to strikeout the next eight consecutive Everett hitters. It wasn't until the bottom of the fourth inning that Everett recorded their first base runner with a walk by catcher Andy Thomas.
Frasso came out of the game after just 4.0 innings of work, recording an impressive line of 10 strikeouts, zero hits, and just one walk.
Vancouver struck again in the top of the fifth with a first pitch home run 412 feet to right field by center fielder Garrett Spain.
The momentum started to shift in the bottom of the fifth inning as Vancouver brought in Sean Wymer to pitch. Both Mike Salvatore and Dariel Gomez worked one-out walks and Trent Tingelstad lined a single to center field to load the bases and give Everett their first hit of the game. James Parker worked the count full and drew a walk for the Frogs first run of the contest.
Marte then brought the crowd to their feet, lining a two-run double to left field bringing Everett to within just one run. That's when Lewis was able to bring in the tying run on a sacrifice fly, knotting the contest up at 4-4.
Wymer lasted just 0.2 innings forcing coach Brent Lavallee to go to his bullpen. Juan Nunez recorded the final out of the inning, leaving the score tied.
The Canadians would go on to score one run in the seventh, two runs in the eighth, and one run in the ninth building an 8-4 lead. It proved to be too much as the AquaSox went down 1-2-3 in the ninth, dropping the series opener while recording only two hits.
Juan Nunez recorded the win (2-0) while Everett relief pitcher Matthew Willrodt (0-1) was saddled with the loss.
