MONTREAL, Quebec - The Montreal Impact defeated Sounders FC 4-1 Saturday night in the inaugural game at Stade Saputo. Eddie Johnson scored Seattle's lone goal and Patrice Bernier had three assists for Montreal.
The loss for Sounders FC (7-4-3, 24 points) snapped a ten-match road unbeaten streak, second best all-time in MLS, dating back to July 30, 2011.
Montreal (4-7-3, 15 points) ended a three-match winless streak, and their four goals are the most in the franchise's short history.
The Impact got on the board first in the 18th minute when Bernier found Felipe Martins near the top of the box on the left side, and Martins tightly fitted a low shot inside the far post.
Justin Mapp made it 2-0 in the 51st minute when Bernier played to him on the left side with a lot of space. The 10-year MLS veteran cut inside, dribbled all the way to the top of the box, and sent a low shot that finished inside the left post, just out of the reach of Bryan Meredith.
Rookie Andrew Wenger put the home side up 3-0 in the 58th minute when he got behind the defense on a ball from Bernier and finished inside the near post.
Two minutes before Wenger's goal, Seattle defender Jhon Kennedy Hurtado was issued a red card for a hard tackle, forcing Sounders FC to play the remainder of the game a man down.
Johnson cut the lead to 3-1 for the Rave Green in the 61st minute when he got behind the defense on a ball from Fredy Montero. Alvaro Fernandez played to Montero, who then found Johnson. Johnson chipped the oncoming Donovan Ricketts for his fourth goal of the season.
It was the fourth assist of the season for Montero, who has now scored or assisted (four goals, four assists) in six of his last eight games. Across all competitions, Montero has six goals and four assists over his last nine games.
Lamar Neagle added the final tally for the Impact in the 87th minute. The Federal Way-native made a run up the left side and into the box, beat two defenders and finished inside the far post for his first goal of the season.
Sounders FC pressed hard in the last part of the first half, creating a few good chances to no avail. In the 37th minute, Fernandez sent in a long cross from the left side that found the head of Johnson, but the striker's attempt sailed high.
In the 40th minute, a Mauro Rosales corner found Johnson, whose poke towards the goal was denied by Ricketts as Montero ran in to strike it.
In first half stoppage time, Andy Rose found Brad Evans in the box for a shot, but Evans' shot was saved by Ricketts.
Sounders FC returns to action Wednesday when they host Sporting Kansas City. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. PT on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field.
