NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas - The Corpus Christi IceRays battled Saturday to a 3-2 road victory over the Lone Star Brahmas at NYTEX Sports Centre. Jake Stella scored twice for the IceRays and goaltender Florian Mnich made 36 saves.
So far this season, Corpus Christi (10-11-1-0, 21 pts.) and Lone Star (11-8-2-2, 26 pts.) have split all three weekend sets between the two teams.
Santeri Hartikainen opened the scoring with a successful shot from near the goal line for a power-play goal at 7:25 of the first period.
In the second period, Corpus Christi got another goal on the power play. Anthony Firriolo's shot from the right point was stopped by Lone Star netminder Harrison Feeney, but Stella was in the low slot to jam the rebound home.
Stella scored again 1:26 into the third period to put the IceRays up 3-0. The Brahmas responded with a pair of goals two minutes apart from Scott Persson at 5:32 and 7:32. Lone Star pulled Feeney for an extra attacker, and ended up on the power play to make it a 6-on-4 advantage in the game's final minute, but Mnich shut the door to secure his second victory in as many starts.
Lone Star outshot Corpus Christi by a 38-35 margin. In a much-improved effort on special teams, the IceRays went 2-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
The IceRays now have a bye week to start December before returning to American Bank Center for the final two home games of the calendar year. Corpus Christi will face the Odessa Jackalopes Dec. 7-8, including the IceRays' Teddy Bear Toss as part of the Saturday contest.
