IceHogs Send Three to Fuel

The American Hockey League's (AHL) Rockford IceHogs announced Saturday that they have assigned goaltender Jake Hildebrand, as well as defensemen Nick Mattson and Jonathan Carlsson to the ECHL's Indy Fuel. The Fuel conclude their 2016 preseason schedule Saturday night at 6 p.m. when they host the Fort Wayne Komets at Indiana Farmers Coliseum.

Hildebrand, 23 joined the Allen Americans last spring after his college career at Michigan State University, and showed a 5-1-0-0 record in six games, posting a 2.31 goals against average and a .925 save percentage. The 6-foot, 194-pound netminder also appeared in eight Kelly Cup Playoff games, sporting a 3-2 record in helping the Americans capture their second-consecutive league championship.

In four seasons with the Spartans, Hildebrand compiled a 45-70-14 record, with a 2.54 goals against average and a .921 save percentage. Only the second player in Michigan State hockey history to be earn Team MVP honors in each of his four years at school, the native of Butler, Penn. was named the Big Ten Goaltender and Player of the Year in 2014-15, in addition to capturing a spot on the NCAA First All-American Team.

Mattson, 24, returns to Indy after posting 15 points (1g, 14a) in 48 games with the Fuel in 2015-16. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound defenseman also suited up for 17 contests with the IceHogs last season, scoring one goal and six assists. A sixth-round selection (No. 180 overall) of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Mattson is a 2015 graduate of the University of North Dakota, where he accumulated 78 points (17g, 61a) in 153 total games.

Carlsson, 28, has played in 73 career ECHL games split between Evansville IceMen and Toledo Walleye. An alternate captain for the IceMen in 2015-16, the 6-foot-2, 187-pound blueliner tallied one goal and four assists in 46 games prior to joining the IceHogs last March. The native of Uppsala, Sweden chipped in two goals and seven assists in 25 games for Rockford last season, adding a goal in two Calder Cup Playoff appearances. Selected in the sixth round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Blackhawks, Carlsson also has eight years of professional experience in Sweden.

Additionally, Indy announced Tuesday that forwards John Scully, Marcus Mitchell and goaltender Storm Phaneuf have been released from their tryout contracts.
