Port Huron Icehawks News Release
PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks snapped a four-game losing streak when they beat the Flint Generals 3-2 at McMorran Arena on Sunday. This was the third game in three nights between the Icehawks and Generals, with Flint taking the first two games.
Port Huron remains in second place in the International Hockey League with a record of 30-16-0-3, while Flint stays in last place at 17-25-2-4.
The Generals took the first 13 shots of the game but were unable to find the back of the net in the first period. The Icehawks got on the board when Kerry Bowman scored on an odd-man rush at 11:57 of the first period. Port Huron goalie Larry Sterling had a very busy period, stopping 17 shots, assisting on Bowman's goal and stopping a Generals penalty shot. The Generals outshot the Icehawks 17-10 in the period.
Flint came out firing in the second period and tied the game on John Ronan's unassisted goal at 1:38. The Generals broke the tie when Jamie Schaafsma scored his 17th goal of the season at 14:26. Matt Moffat and Dan Lapointe earned assists on the play. Port Huron outshot Flint 13-10 in the frame, but goalie Nick Niedert was able to stop all the Icehawks shots.
The IHL's best penalty-killing unit struck again when Tab Lardner tied the game on a shorthanded goal halfway through the third period. Sterling earned his second assist of the night on the goal. The Icehawks regained the lead when Jason Selleke snuck the puck past Niedert with less than five minutes to play. The Icehawks played their most aggressive hockey in the third period, doubling the Generals in shots, 18-9.
Port Huron goalies Larry Sterling and Adam Russo have now accounted for six assists this season, the most by any goaltending duo in the IHL.
The Icehawks will hit the road for games in Fort Wayne, Bloomington and Quad city this week before returning home on Tuesday, February 23 to take on Muskegon.
