Quad City Mallards News Release
DAYTON, Ohio - Derek MacIntyre made 38 saves and John Snowden scored two goals and added an assist as the Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, fell to the host Dayton Gems 4-2 Sunday.
The Gems were up 5-on-3 and already leading 1-0 when Snowden buried a rebound to make it 2-0 at 10:34 of the second period. Just 70 seconds later, however, the shorthanded Mallards pulled right back within one when Obi Aduba scored on a breakaway.
With just five seconds left in the the second the Gems reestablished the two goal lead with what would prove to be the game winning goal. Defenseman Russ Smith swept a rebound in just before the horn to make it 3-1. Kyle Jones replaced Mallards starting goaltender Jerad Kaufmann at the start of the third period.
Justin White walked in alone to cut the Gems lead to 3-2 at 2:34 of the third period, but Snowden's late empty net goal would put the game away.
Mike Vaskivuo's drive from the high slot had opened the scoring at 4:32 of the first period.
