Lafayette, LA â Louisiana IceGators Head Coach and Vice President of Hockey Operations Todd Gordon today announced the signing of Right Wing Alex Materukhin to a contract for the 2004-05 ECHL season.
Materukhin joined the IceGators last season after playing his rookie year with the Richmond Renegades. The 22 year old native of Kiev, Ukraine was one of the IceGators top performers in 2003-04, finishing 2nd on the team in goals (27) and total points (61). On January 25,2004 against the Florida Everblades, Materukhin etched his name into the IceGators record book by scoring 3 goals in 3 minutes and 22 seconds, the fastest hat trick in team history.
"It's very important for the IceGators to have a player of Alex's caliber to return for next season," said Gordon. "He's proven to be a top player in this league and we are very happy to have him back."
Materukhin garnered several personal honors last season, winning the ECHL Player Of The Week award for the week of January 19-25, 2004. He also received his first call up to the AHL, joining the Houston Aeros on March 18, 2004. At the end of the season Materukhin won the "Fan Favorite" award as voted by the IceGators Booster Club.
"I am looking forward to coming back and performing as well as I did last season and hopefully improving my level of play, " said Materukhin. "Coach Gordon is going to put together a great team and I want to play with talented players."
