Louisiana IceGators News Release

LAFAYETTE, LA - Thursday night the Louisiana IceGators (7-20) returned to the Dome to take on the Knoxville IceBears (11-13). As the 'Gators took to the ice they had a new head coach, Kevin Kaminski, at the helm. He hoped to end the IceGators a nine game losing streak but it would not happen tonight. The 'Gators fell 5-2 to the IceBears.

The Knoxville IceBears began the first period with immediate success. The IceBears scored 33 seconds into the opening period when Mike Bulawka (KNX) scored his seventh goal of the season. Less than a minute later, Mark Van Vliet (KNX) scored and put the IceBears up 2-0 in the first two minutes. The 'Gators quickly responded and had nine unanswered shots on goal and with 16:37 remaining in the period, Emery Olauson (KNX) was called for hooking and put the IceGators on a power play. Cameron Sault (LOU) scored the power play goal two seconds later and cut the IceBears lead in half. IceBears' Olauson added his 14th goal of the season with 1:04 left in the period and put the IceBears up 3-1 at the end of the first period.

The second period began with Tyler Fletcher (KNX) getting called for hooking but the 'Gators were unable to capitalize on the penalty. The period would continue on quietly until 8:13 left in the period. At that time, Trevor Karasiewicz (LOU) was called for hooking. The 'Gators Nick Vandenbeld scored 30 seconds after the penalty was called and cut into the IceBears' lead 3-2. But in the closing seconds of the period, Olauson scored his second goal of the game on a rebounded puck and put the IceBears up 4-2 at the end of the second period.

The third period began with the 'Gators outshooting the IceBears 19-12 but the 'Gators were still down by two goals. The IceBears began the period on the power play and were able to capitalize. Olauson got his hat trick goal 30 seconds in to the period and put the IceBears up 5-2.

"I learned a lot tonight," replied the new IceGators Head Coach Kevin Kaminski. "I now know the type players we have and areas we will improve in. This is a good team, with good talent, they just have to play together and play the right style."

Louisiana goes on the road for New Year's Eve to take on the Columbus Cottonmouths. The 'Gators will then celebrate the New Year in the Dome on Saturday, January 1 against the IceBears of Knoxville. Then the Surge come back to the Dome on January 4. Don't miss your chance to bring a group to the game and take advantage of the 10 for 10 program. Groups of 10 can purchase tickets for $10.
