Louisiana IceGators News Release
Pensacola, Fla.- A third-period surge tonight allowed the Pensacola IceFlyers to keep their perfect record for at least one more night.
The IceFlyers scored three goals in the final frame to take a 4-1 victory over the Louisiana IceGators. Jeremy Gates led Pensacola with a goal and an assist. Brett Lutes picked up two assists in the game.
The two teams will head west down Interstate 10 to Lafayette for a Saturday night rematch. The puck will drop in the Cajundome at 7:05 p.m.
"I thought we dominated the majority of the game," said IceGators head coach Drew Omicioli. "I was extremely impressed with the way we played the first period and how we battled throughout the night. Unfortunately, Pensacola capitalized on a few bad bounces and penalties, and the outcome went their way."
Pensacola took a 1-0 lead thanks to Gates' goal at the three-minute mark of the second period. Drew Akins assisted on the play.
Louisiana tied the game nearly eight minutes later when Jason Cohen scored an unassisted goal.
Jason Fabian put the IceFlyers ahead two minutes into the third period by scoring off assists from Lutes and Brett Beebe.
Adam Pawlick and Paul Rodrigues both added insurance goals in the final minute of regulation.
Omicioli says his team must come out swinging tomorrow night if it wants a chance to win.
"We need to come out [Saturday] and play all three periods like we played the first period tonight," Omicioli said. "We need be more disciplined in order to grab the two points."
