Niagara IceDogs News Release
The Niagara IceDogs picked up a big 3-2 overtime victory over the visiting Sudbury Wolves in front of a sellout crowd of 3,145 in their annual Teddy Bear Toss game!
Joel Wigle would get the teddy bears flying early, striking only 1:10 into the game to give the IceDogs a 1-0 lead and help send off a barrage of over 1,000 bears on to the Gatorade Garden City Complex ice. After a quick cleanup, the teams would get things back underway and exchange chances throughout the rest of the period, but both goaltenders would be up to the task, keeping the score at 1-0 through one period of play. Shots after one favoured the IceDogs 12-11.
The second period would see the goaltenders be the story once again as the teams would combine for 16 shots, but no goals in the second period, keeping the score at 1-0 IceDogs. Shots after 40 minutes were 22-17 Niagara.
The third period would see the IceDogs get an important insurance marker 1:40 into the third, as Carter Verhaeghe would score off of a great feed by Steven Shipley to make it 2-0 in favour of the home side. Sudbury would get on the board with a powerplay goal with just under six minutes remaining to make it 2-1. Unfortunately Sudbury would then knot things up less than a minute later, scoring to make it 2-2 with just over five minutes remaining. That would prove to be it for scoring as the teams headed into overtime deadlocked at 2-2. Shots after regulation were 35-30 in favour of the IceDogs.
In overtime the IceDogs would carry the play and then at the midway point of overtime, Mitchell Theoret would make a great move to the net and fire one home to give the IceDogs a 3-2 overtime victory!
The IceDogs will now hit the road and head to Brampton for their final game before the holiday break tomorrow afternoon at 2pm. The IceDogs will next return home on New Year's Eve when they host the Erie Otters at 6pm! Fans are also invited to stick around after our New Year's Eve game for a post game skate with players. Tickets for that and all other IceDogs home games are available and can be purchased at all IceDogs ticketing locations!
