Niagara IceDogs News Release
The Niagara IceDogs have been eliminated from the playoffs in the Rogers OHL Eastern Conference Championships with a 4-1 defeat by the Mississauga Majors in Game 5 of the series Tuesday night at the Hershey Centre.
Although the first period ended in a scoreless tie, there was no shortage of action between the two teams.
Both clubs created some solid scoring chances, but Niagara seemed to have a better grasp on the play for the most part, even though they trailed the shot clock 12-7 after 20 minutes.
The game's scoring wouldn't be opened until the 6:47 mark of the second period as Majors captain Casey Cizikas potted his third of the playoffs to give his team their first lead of the game.
The IceDogs didn't let up though as they gained ground on the shot clock and kept Mississauga on their toes causing Devante Smith-Pelly to take a minor penalty to give the 'Dogs a crack at the power play.
Dougie Hamilton proved how dangerous he can be on the power play as he converted for his fourth of the post-season at the 10:43 mark to tie the game 1-1 on a beautiful play with the help of fellow top draft prospect Ryan Strome.
Johnson Andrews, who scored the IceDogs only goal in Game 4 while also getting in a fight to spark Niagara to a 5-3 win in Game 2, also picked up an assist on the play. Andrews has been one of the IceDogs most consistent players in the past few games.
From there, the Majors closed out the period with urgency as Rob Flick and Joseph Cramarossa scored back-to-back goals 37 seconds apart to give the home team a 3-1 lead going into the second intermission.
Shots on goal were 25-20 in favour of Mississauga.
The Majors opened the third period scoring as well just over a minute in with Maxim Kitsyn getting the tally to make it 4-1.
The IceDogs pressed away for the remainder of the period, but couldn't manage to shake the three goal lead and the Majors took a 4-1 victory to capture the Bobby Orr Trophy and advance to the League Final round.
The entire Niagara IceDogs organization would like to thank the players and coaches on a more than successful season and post-season and we certainly know we will be back next year with the same goal of competing for the Memorial Cup title.
To the over-agers, Darren Archibald, Tim Billingsley and Jason Wilson, we thank you for your time spent with the team and wish you the best of luck in your future endeavours.
To all the fans; we thank you for your continued support both at home and on the road and wish all of you a safe and happy summer.
Thanks again for your support and we hope to see you back at the rink next year!
