Niagara IceDogs News Release
The Niagara IceDogs clinched the regular season Eastern Conference title as they picked up a big 8-1 win over the visiting Peterborough Petes in front of a sellout crowd of 3,145 at the Gatorade Garden City Complex Thursday night.
The IceDogs got off to a great start in the first as Mitchell Theoret opened the scoring less than four minutes in to make it 1-0 for the home side. Tom Kuhnhackl then continued his strong play, picking up his fifth point in the past three games with a goal to make it 2-0 midway through the frame. The IceDogs would finish off the period with a pair of powerplay goals as Steven Shipley and Ryan Strome both beat Peterborough starter Mike Morrison to make 4-0 after one period of play. Shots in the period were 15-9 for Niagara.
The second period would see Peterborough find the scoreboard as they beat IceDogs starter Mark Visentin 9:59 into the second to make it 4-1. Brett Ritchie would help the IceDogs answer quickly, striking twice before the end of the period to make it 6-1 after 40 minutes. Shots after two favoured the IceDogs 26-23.
The third period would see the IceDogs close things out with two more goals, as Jamie Oleksiak would find the back of the net twice, the second on a powerplay, to make it an 8-1 final.
Visentin continued his strong play stopping 34 of 35 shots to pick up his 30th victory of the season.
The IceDogs will now close out the regular season by playing host to the visiting Ottawa 67's on Saturday and then travelling Mississauga to close out the season against the Majors on Sunday.
While there are only single seats and standing room tickets available for Saturday's game, tickets for the IceDogs first two home playoff games are on sale now at all IceDogs ticketing locations.
