Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs played host to the Sarnia Sting tonight in the first ever CHL pride game at the Meridian Centre. The 'Dogs sported beautiful commemorative jerseys in celebration of unity and acceptance in sports and all facets of life.

The first period gave fans an opportunity to see the IceDogs wearing their pride jerseys in action. The 'Dogs rose to the occasion offensively in the early part of the opening frame as rookie Oliver Castleman potted his first career OHL goal on assists from Hayden Davis and Austin Clapham. The captain Ryan Mantha tallied his third of the season shortly thereafter on the power play as Chris Paquette and Graham Knott picked up assists. The Sting added a pair of goals as well, leading to a 2-2 tie after 20 minutes.

Heading into the second period, the IceDogs and the Sting traded a handful of power play chances as things got rather physical. Graham Knott created open space for himself on a breakaway as he does so often, slipping one through the five-hole of the Sting goaltender on assists from Johnny Corneil and Akil Thomas. The first line was clicking on all cylinders as they seem to have developed a sustainable chemistry between each other. After 40 minutes of play, Sarnia held a 4-3 lead.

The third and final period resembled a playoff game as the two foes battled for every inch of ice. After a questionable goaltender interference call robbed the IceDogs of the game tying goal, Sarnia added some insurance with a late period goal to make it 5-3. The IceDogs showed resiliency as Akil Thomas notched another one of his patented highlight reel goals to pull the 'Dogs within one, however that wasn't enough to complete the comeback as Sarnia would hold on to win 5-4.
