Niagara IceDogs News Release

Though they sported a roster laden with first- and second-year players, the IceDogs' first home exhibition game of the season ended in a tie in front of 2,113.

Hurt following a shot from the crease from IceDogs forward Joel Wigle 1:10 into the first period, Generals' starting goaltender Kevin Bailie left the game and is replaced by Dan Altshuller.

Just 1:22 into the first period, IceDogs' forward Carter Verhaeghe is assessed a high-sticking penalty and a mere 15 seconds later, Generals' defenseman Nick Quinn scored the first goal of the game, a shot from the blue line courtesy of a pass from defense partner Josh Brown.

With 42 seconds left in the period, Generals' Josh Graves gets into a scuffle with IceDogs' forward Myles Doan. In the far left corner, Graves throws his helmet off in an attempt to fight Doan who responds by grabbing Graves. Graves is tossed for the remainder of the period while Doan is called for two-minute holding and roughing penalties, leaving the IceDogs shorthanded for four minutes.

The first period ended with the teams tied at eight shots on goal.

The IceDogs escaped their penalty kill scot-free but 3:51 into the second period, Generals' defenseman Jimmy McDowell scores, assisted by forwards Scott Laughton and J.P. Labardo. Following the goal, second-year IceDogs' goaltender Mike Gallardi, who played 29:52 and stopped nine of 11 shots, is pulled for Dalton McGrath.

The goaltending change infused some life into the IceDogs' offense and with 1:19 left in the second period, Myles Doan shoots the puck on net and Johnson Andrews scoops up the rebound, cutting the Generals' lead in half.

But the Generals weren't giving up the game that easily. The Generals' defense began the third period with a bang and a mere 19 seconds into the period, Daniel Maggio passes the puck across the crease to Kyle Hope, making the score 3-1.

The IceDogs offense then took charge, scoring a pair of goals to put them back in the game. 8:30 into the period, second-year defenseman Jesse Graham scores on a shot from the near-side circle following a pass from Derek Todosichuk and 61 seconds later, rookie forward Carter Verhaeghe tips the puck top-shelf from the front of the net on a pass from captain Andrew Agozzino.

An amazing diving save from Dalton McGrath with 8:20 left in the period sealed the score.

The IceDogs return to action Thursday as they host the Erie Otters at 7 p.m. Tickets for this game are still available and can be purchased at any IceDogs ticketing location. For more information, contact the IceDogs office (Mon-Fri, 9-5) at 905-687-DOG1.
