IceDogs Exciting 3rd Period Comeback Falls Just Short in 7-6 Loss to Greyhounds

The IceDogs started a Northern 2 in 2 tonight in Sault Ste Marie for the second meeting against the Greyhounds in just over a week. The last time these two teams faced each other, the IceDogs prevailed 6-1 in front of a sold out Meridian Centre crowd.

Despite giving up an early 3-0 lead to the Greyhounds, the 'Dogs found their paws and they started pushing back in the Soo. With less than 2 minutes remaining in the first period, a Bukac shot from the blueline bounced off Matt Villalta, to Kirill Maksimov, who's shot rebounded straight to Jack Studnicka who beat the netminder low glove side to score his 22nd of the season! Then, just over a minute later, Jason Robertson's blast from the blueline cut the Greyhounds' lead to 1! Robertson's 38th of the season extended his point streak to 11 games.

The Greyhounds responded in the 2nd period with 3 unanswered goals, although the period appeared to be closer than the score would show. Only 6 shots separated the two teams, with the Soo leading 31-25. The Greyhounds had only won 1 more face off than the 'Dogs.

The Greyhounds added another powerplay goal less than a minute into the 3rd period, to take a 7-2 lead. The IceDogs scored a powerplay goal of their own nearing the midway mark of the period. Jack Studnicka's 23rd of the season was a tip in off a shot from Akil Thomas. With just under 5 minutes to play, Captain Ben Jones brought the IceDogs within 3 with his 30th of the season, tipping in a shot from Matt Brassard at the blueline. Your Captain is meant to be the guy the team can lean on in moments of need, and Ben Jones did just that! Bringing the 'Dogs within 2, Jones roofed the puck over Villalta's with just over 2 minutes to play in the game. Then, with a minute and a half remaining, Jason Robertson sniped his 39th of the season to bring Niagara within one. Despite continuing to press hard in the final minute, and outshooting the Greyhounds by 11 shots, the third period comeback fell just short. The IceDogs fell to the Soo 7-6.

The IceDogs are back in action tomorrow afternoon in Sudbury against the Wolves.

The 'Dogs have two more away games in Sudbury Wolves (Feb. 10), and Erie Otters (Feb. 16) before returning home on February 17th against Sudbury.

Dedicated towards mental health in youth, the game is presented by the Canadian Mental Health Association, Niagara Branch, and Teachers Life. There will be a post-game family skate, presented by Tim Hortons, offering free hot chocolate! Helmets and skates must be checked at ice-level before the game. Children under 14 must wear a helmet.
