IceDogs Drop Sting 10-3 In Action-Packed Thriller

March 5, 2011 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release

David Pacan led the Niagara IceDogs to a 10-3 victory over the Sarnia Sting with two goals and four assists in front of a sold-out crowd at the Gatorade Garden City Complex Saturday night.

The IceDogs came out quick and hard in the first as they potted two goals within the first 1:40 of play.

Andrew Agozzino opened the scoring on the first shot of the game just 28 seconds in with the help of Alex Friesen and David Pacan, before Ryan Strome potted his 30th goal of the season just over a minute later from Dougie Hamilton and Jason Wilson, giving the 'Dogs an early 2-0 lead.

The Sting struck back under a minute later to continue the fast-paced scoring as rookie Alex Galchenyuk potted his 25th of the season to cut the Niagara lead to 2-1.

At the 6:19 mark, Andrew Agozzino notched his second goal of the night (38th of the season) by jamming the puck past Brandon Hope with some heavy traffic in front of the net. The play went under review, but it was deemed a good goal and the 'Dogs took a 3-1 lead.

David Pacan then continued his successful weekend with his 18th of the season and fifth point in the past two games to extend the Niagara lead to 4-1.

The IceDogs would take the 4-1 lead into the first intermission, while also leading the shot clock 20-8.

The IceDogs dominated the second period as well as they were able to kill off two penalties and convert twice on the power play.

David Pacan potted his second goal of the game at the 8:28 mark with Darren Archibald and Steven Shipley getting the assists to make it 5-1.

Alex Friesen then followed up with his third point of the night (first goal) with just 20 seconds left in the frame as he made a nifty spinning move to the backhand to beat Hope and give the 'Dogs a commanding 6-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.

Niagara opened the third period scoring at the 1:15 mark as Darren Archibald capitalized on a Jason Wilson rebound to make it 7-1.

Myles Doan took a hooking penalty shortly after the goal, and rookie sensation Nail Yakupov potted his 45th goal of the season for the Sting with the man advantage to give the game a score of 7-2.

After the goal, Yakupov would stir the pot once again by picking up a high-sticking double minor that would also lead to a line tussle at centre ice, and starting goaltenders Dalton McGrath and Brandon Hope left their nets and went toe-to-toe for a spirited tilt seeing both tenders landing several solid punches over a span of roughly 30 seconds.

Following the brouhaha, the IceDogs scored three more times with the goals going to Dougie Hamilton, Steven Shipley and Jason Wilson, while Kale Kerbashian also scored for the Sting to give the game a final score of 10-3.

The IceDogs return to action next Thursday, March 10 as they host the Brampton Battalion at 7 p.m.

Tickets for this game are still available and can be purchased at any IceDogs ticketing location. For more information, please contact the IceDogs office from Monday-Friday at 905-687-DOG1.
