Niagara IceDogs News Release
Thursday night's matchup at the Jack saw the Niagara IceDogs triumph in a shootout over the visiting Mississauga Steelheads 4-3!
The first period of the game saw a high energy IceDogs team fighting for the opening goal. Unfortunately, the Steelheads would strike first at the 11 minute mark to give them an early 1-0 lead. Undeterred, the IceDogs would continue to pressure the visitors and with two minutes left to play in the period Niagara's Carter Verhaeghe would bury the puck to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the first intermission. Shots after one were in the IceDogs favour, 14-6.
Despite offensive pressure from both sides, the goaltenders would be the story in the second period and the score would remain tied at 1-1 after 40 minutes of play. Shots after two continued to favour the IceDogs 17-15.
The third period got off to a unlucky start as the visiting Steelheads would quickly gain a 2 goal advantage after only 5 minutes of play. Unfazed, the IceDogs would battle back and Brett Ritchie would cut the Steelheads lead to one on the powerplay, making it 3-2 with just eight minutes left to play. The comeback would be completed four minutes later as Ryan Strome would tie things up 3-3 and send the game into overtime.
In overtime, both teams would have solid opportunities but the goaltenders would remain strong and send the game into a shootout.
In the shootout, Mississauga took the first shot and scored, and Steven Shipley would be stopped for the IceDogs giving the visitors a 1-0 lead after one shooter. The second round would see both shooters stopped, giving Mississauga a chance to end it with a goal in the third round. Moran would make a big stop in the third round, giving Jesse Graham a chance to extend the game, which he would take advantage of, scoring to send the shootout to a fourth round. Moran would then stop his third straight Mississauga shooter giving rookie Brendan Perlini a chance to end it and Perlini would make no mistake, scoring to give the IceDogs a 4-3 win!
The IceDogs will be back in action this upcoming Sunday, March 10th against the visiting Barrie Colts at 2 pm. Tickets for this and all other IceDogs home games are still available and can be purchased at all IceDogs ticketing locations.
