St. John's IceCaps News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL - The St. John's IceCaps swept the two-game series against the Utica Comets with a 6-3 win on Wednesday night at Mile One Centre.
Charles Hudon started the scoring early with a breakaway tally just 2:11 into the first. Philip Samuelsson and Joel Hanley picked up the helpers. Utica's Joseph LaBate evened it up with seven minutes left in the first frame, but Nikita Scherbak potted an unassisted goal just over a minute later to give the IceCaps the lead.
Hudon picked up his second marker of the night on a setup from Scherbak in the second to stretch the lead to two. Alexandre Grenier and Michael Chaput added goals for the Comets to even it up heading into the third.
Bobby Farnham scored the go-ahead tally early in the third (from Brett Lernout and Michael McCarron), which would also serve as the game-winner. Daniel Carr added a goal just over a minute later, his second in as many games. The Comets pulled netminder Richard Bachman late in the third, but couldn't rally, while IceCaps forward Stefan Matteau took advantage of the open net for a final score of 6-3.
Nikita Scherbak is now on a five-game point streak with 5 goals and two assists. Scherbak has scored in the past four games for the IceCaps.
