Winnipeg Ice News Release
The Winnipeg ICE looked to bounce back after a hard-fought 5-4 OT loss against the Brandon Wheat Kings last night, as they took on the Swift Current Broncos. The Broncos are looking for revenge themselves, as they were defeated by the ICE last Friday, 5-4. Swift Current is coming off of an impressive 3-2 shootout win against the second place Saskatoon Blades on Saturday and looked to stay in the win column against Winnipeg.
Winnipeg held the play for most of the first period but Isaac Poulter stood tall for the Broncos and stopped all sixteen shots. With 1.5 seconds left on the clock it was the Broncos however, against the turn of play, who broke the deadlock when Josh Davies sent Owen Williams on a partial breakaway and the Swift Current forward snuck it past Gage Alexander to take the lead into the first intermission. Winnipeg led 16-5 in shots after one period.
The ICE tied it up 3:11 into the second period as Zach Benson batted a puck out of mid air past Poulter's out-stretched glove. Conor Geekie and Michael Milne drew the assists on Benson's seventh of the year. Winnipeg went up by one when Peyton Krebs rifled it past Poulter's glove side, adding to his 19-game point streak. Milne added to the ICE's lead just two minutes later with a well placed top corner shot on a 2-on-1 with Benson. The Broncos got one back before the period ended as Caleb Wyrostock made a slick move to open up some space and then fired it right under Alexander's blocker to bring the Broncos within one goal heading into the third period.
James Form added to Winnipeg's lead early in the third with a tip from the slot off of a Krebs' point shot. The goal came at 3:41 as Skyler Bruce picked up the second assist. Benson then scored his second of the game after snapping home a one-timer from Milne on a 2-on-1 to make it 5-2 for the ICE, which is how it would end.
Winnipeg will be back in action on Wednesday at 9:00pm CT against the Moose Jaw Warriors.
