JOHNSTOWN, PA - The Ice Miners were two games below .500 when tied after two periods coming into Saturday night's game at Johnstown but two third period goals propelled them to a 5-4 win in the front end of a weekend home-and-home with the Tomahawks.
In Johnstown's home opener, they opened the scoring when Josh Bowes netted his first goal of the season 4:16 into the game, burying a rebound off the back boards. Michael Maiden tied the score at 11:46 when his shot through traffic beat Tomahawk goaltender Ryan Bednard. Keystone then took the lead late in the frame, when captain Lucas Little scored a 5 on 3 goal, his 2nd in as many games and 3rd overall in the span. The score was 2-1 Ice Miners after one period.
The Ice Miners had a defensive breakdown at 9:26 of the 2nd period and the Tomahawks converted on two-on-none break as Cam Bleck set up Casey Linkenheld for his first goal of the year. It took only 59 seconds for the Ice Miners' Jon Hall to respond, netting a goal in his third straight game. Not three minutes after that, Dakota Menslage scored a powerplay goal to knot the score at 3 at the end of two periods.
In the 3rd, Vito Aluia, returning to the lineup after a five game absence, broke the tie with a partial breakaway at 7:21. Noah Batis added his team leading 6th goal of the season at 12:36 to add some insurance. Andrew Romano was able to score at the final horn for the Tomahawks, but it was too little too late and the Ice Miners took their second straight 5-4 win over Johnstown.
The two teams will play again at the Ice Mine tomorrow afternoon at 1:00pm. Gates open at noon and children in Halloween costumes get in for just $5.
